Frequently Asked Questions

What age is appropriate to begin piano, guitar, or drumset lessons?

Instrumental music lessons help develop fine motor skills, concentration, and learning skills. Many students can begin lessons at age 5 or 6 and studies show that this can help to make all aspects of their education more effective.

What do we need to make online lessons effective?

Lessons are most effective if you have an acoustic or electric piano/keyboard/guitar/drumset, a laptop or tablet with a webcam (often built-in), and high speed internet.  Headphones or earbuds are helpful but not necessary. Using a phone can work as well, though the small screen can present challenges for the student.

Aren't these instruments taught in school?

As a public school music teacher for 30 years, it is evident that most scholastic music programs contain a gap in piano, guitar, and drumset instruction as these are difficult to teach in a public school ensemble based setting. Most school systems will offer brass, woodwind, string, and concert percussion instruction beginning in 3rd or 4th grade.  Acquiring the fine motor skills, literacy skills, and focusing skills that instrumental music promotes can provide students with an early boost to their academic career and can begin in kindergarten or grade 1 for most children.
